Audio book: Luginsland – Ein Turm geht auf Entdeckungstour The realisation of the audio book project, which should bring two regions (Rathenow in Gernmany and Aluthgama in Sri Lanka) closer together, took more than one year. It is a joint project of "Spektrum", a school for children with special needs in Rathenow, the association LOTUS international and the Education Development Center in Aluthgama, supported by different institutions, e.g. the music school Rathenow, the drum group of "Spektrum", Jahngrundschule, Bürgelschule and so on. The kids adopted roles on the CD, as narrator, singer or musician. Dandy's Musikproduktion was responsible for the recording, editing and production and did it very professional, so that everyone was pleasantly surprised by the finished product. Be surprised and enchanted as well – by a story which combines the beauty and sights of the German Havelland with interesting impressions of the Sri Lankan landscape, culture and lifestyle, mixed with music of both regions. An audio book not just for kids! On March the 13th, the audio book will be officially presented as part of a charity concert in Rathenow. With buying the CD you support "Spektrum" in Rathenow and the EDC in Aluthgama. Feel free to contact our partners if you want to buy one or more. Thank you at all participants, sponsors and supporters, who made the realisation of the project possible. Date: 02/03/2010 |

New volunteer in february 2010 A few days ago, our new volunteer from Germany arrived Sonja from Pobenhausen. Mainly she will work with children, do the English class in the EDC and help in the orphanage, but she will also do some nature conservation (planting mangroves, beach cleaning). Next week she will visit a pre-school and start a new German course in the EDC a challenge which Sonja will definitely fulfill. She is a quiet but hard-working and sympathic yound woman, who supports us and gives pleasure to the children. Thank you! Date: 12/02/2010 | |
Packages from schools in Rathenow, Germany – 100 kilogramme of presents! Pupils of the Jahngrundschule and the Jahngymnasium in Rathenow gave us a great surprise! They collected Christmas presents for our students and send them to us in ten big packages, each with a weight of ten kilogramme. They included stuffed animals, pens, colored pencils, booklets, blocs, toothbrushes, clothes, games and a lot of sweets. We classified and separated the presents. Most of them were presented to our best students at a ceremony in the end of january. The stuffed animals were given to a local kindergarten and to a kindergarten near Kandy. The children were really happy, as you can see in the picture below. We plan to give most of the games, toothbrushes and pens to the orphanage in Pahalage. The rest, mainly booklets and blocs will be used in our courses. Of course, the sweets were consumed very fast. The lovely letters in some packages will be translated and given to our students in the English class. So the writers in Germany will get an answer soon. We would like to thank the German children and their parents for the wonderful presents, Frau Koch and Frau Zick for having the idea and organizing it and Frau Berz and Frau Launhardt for that time-consuming packaging and for sending it to us. Bees – small assistants at the EDC About a month ago we introduced a small bee colony into our garden. The bees collect pollen to produce honey. Mainly, the bees will be observed by our students, because they should learn more about nature and we want them to be introduced to nature conservation. In Sri Lanka, bees mainly live in the wild. They build themselves a nest to live together a as colony. So you can rarely buy honey in shops, but the syrup extracted from palm trees and broadleafs, is similar to the popular maple syrup. Beginning of the 7th semester Two days after New Year's Eve the new semester began. We added graphic design to our course offerings. It's the first full year with our new team of teachers who began working together in the 6th semester. As it also did in the last semester, the number of students increased. Now, about 130 children will participate in our computer course, about 100 chilldren will attend one of our English courses (some of them will also be part of the computer course) and 15 students will learn about graphic design. Examinations and certificates Date: 23/01/2010 Right before the new year, students of the 6th grade had their final examinations: 84 students were tested in computers (theoretical knowledge and practice), about 60 students were tested in English (written and pronunciation test). All in all, about 95 % passed the exams. On January the 23th we ceremoniously presented their certificates. Many guests, our volunteers and the families of former and future students were invited. The children prepared a show with singing, dancing and speeches in Singhala, English and Tamil. The best and most hard-working ten students were awarded with presents. Since June 2006, more than 500 students have successfully completed courses at the EDC. This is due to the aid and financial support of our donors, sponsors and volunteers. Thank you very much indeed! |
